Are You Fully Aware of Your Vet Practice’s Emergency Out of Hours Arrangements?

Many veterinary practices do not provide their own out-of-hours (OOH) care. Instead, these services are typically contracted out to third-party providers over which your own vets have little to no control or influence.

This can lead to several challenges that impact the quality and continuity of care for your pet:

  • Frequent Transfers: Pets are often moved between practices, sometimes multiple times, as OOH services may not be available during regular working hours.
  • Delayed Emergency Care: If your practice is unavailable, pet owners may be forced to wait until the OOH service opens, leaving pets in need of urgent attention without immediate help.
  • High Costs: Many OOH services are expensive. In fact, our consultations are often £190 less than the typical cost of others.
  • Unnecessary Diagnostics and Treatments: Some procedures and tests may be performed that aren’t necessary, leading to higher bills and more stress for pet owners.
  • Non-Emergency Cases Treated as Urgent: In some situations, a pet may only need follow-up care the next day, yet they’re treated as an emergency—without you being informed of this.
  • Limited Access to Care: Occasionally, the OOH provider may not be able to offer assistance, and you’ll be directed to another facility, sometimes miles away.
