Chocolate Toxicity Risk Calculator for Dogs
Different types of chocolate contain varying amounts of theobromine, the toxic compound for dogs. Here’s how we calculate the risk to your dog’s health:
Step 1: Determine Theobromine Content
Different types of chocolate contain varying amounts of theobromine, the toxic compound for dogs. Approximate theobromine content per gram:
White Chocolate: ~0.1 mg/g
Milk Chocolate: ~1.5–2 mg/g
Mild Dark Chocolate: ~5–16 mg/g
Strong Dark: ~15–25 mg/g
Cooking Chocolate/Cocoa Powder: ~20–26 mg/g
We begin by calculating the estimated amount of theobromine consumed using the following formula:
Total Theobromine (mg) = (Chocolate Type Theobromine mg/g) × (Amount Consumed in g)
Step 2: Calculate Toxic Dose
The toxic doses of theobromine for dogs are (theobromine consumed per kg of dog’s weight):
Generally No Risk: < 20 mg/kg
Potential for Mild symptoms: > 20 mg/kg
Potential forModerate symptoms: > 40 mg/kg
Potential for Severe symptoms: > 60 mg/kg
Potentially fatal dose: > 100 mg/kg
We calculate the toxicity of the dose using the following formula:
Theobromine per kg = Total Theobromine (mg) ÷ Dog’s Weight (kg)
Step 3: Assess Risk Level
The result of the above calculation is then used in conjunction with the following rubric to assess the risk level in alignment with the agreed risk thresholds accepted by modern veterinary standards.
Theobromine per kg (mg/kg)
Risk Level
Possible Symptoms
< 20 mg/kg
Low Risk
No or mild symptoms (restlessness, mild GI upset)
20–39 mg/kg
Mild to Moderate
Agitation, hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhoea
40–59 mg/kg
Moderate to Severe
Tremors, increased heart rate, high blood pressure
